The items in Thunderbird's "sort by" menu aren't actually check boxes 

but are announced as radio buttons. While they don't behave precisely 

like radio buttons you encounter in most dialogs, they are similar in 

that, if you want to uncheck one of them, you would do this by choosing 

another. When you're in the sort menu, find the one you do want, such as 

"date" and press enter on it. I'm assuming that people using a Braille 

display should be able to push a cursor routing key above the choice 

they want in order to select it.
