The American Civil Liberties Union (aclu.org), a nonprofit at the
forefront of virtually every major battle for civil liberties and
equal justice in this country, is seeking an experienced Web
Developer to work in the National office in New York City within
the Information Technology department. The Web Developer will be
primarily responsible for developing new tools and providing
technical support for the ACLU’s website at aclu.org, as well
as integrated internal and external systems used for advocacy,
email marketing, and online fundraising, including both in-house
development and coordination with vendors as appropriate. The
Web Developer will work closely with the digital team to enhance
the ACLU’s web properties, ensure security and privacy, and
develop new applications to engage their online audience.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Develop, configure, integrate, test and troubleshoot web-based
tools and functionality for the ACLU websites and integrated CRM
and email marketing technologies;
Perform technical maintenance of and on-going development for the
ACLU's websites, including projects related to implementation and
trouble-shooting for CMS and CRM applications;
Research, propose, plan, estimate and develop solutions for new
website needs;
Conduct website maintenance (e.g., control user accounts, access
rights, and passwords) and develop security modules as required;
Track and resolve front- and back-end technical problems and
manage technical projects;
Administer and enhance the ACLU's web analytics solution,
including implementing new features, generating and analyzing
both regular and ad hoc reports, and identifying trends;
Develop and support custom ACLU micro-sites as required, based on
ACLU technical practices and internal client requirements;
Monitor ACLU websites for compliance with ACLU security and
privacy policies, and perform technical updates as necessary,
including responding to new or changing systems with development
of custom solutions for privacy or security;
Technically design, code and review automated tests of website
functionality, and monitor CI environments;
Participate in peer-to-peer code reviews;
Manage vendors relationships and on-going projects;
Assist in evaluation and selection of website consultants;
Other IT projects as required.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field such as
Mathematics or Engineering preferred;
Minimum 3 years’ experience with website development and
related technologies;
Best-practice Drupal development experience, or experience with
similar content management technologies;
Knowledge of PHP, MySQL, HTML5, XML, CSS, JavaScript/jQuery, and
ability to adapt to emerging web technologies;
Ability to troubleshoot cross-compatibility issues for supported
browsers;
Familiarity with Linux/Unix/BSD command-line tools and shell
scripting;
Familiarity with Yii or other PHP frameworks preferred;
Experience with responsive front-end technologies and CSS
authoring frameworks preferred;
Experience with CRM and e-commerce applications preferred;
Experience and community involvement with open-source
applications is preferred;
Experience working with development vendors and interdepartmental
teams;
Excellent organizational and communication skills.
