Hi,
is Mary hearing impaired or speech impaired? If so, that makes it harder to make friends. I was in a school for the handicapped with very limited success in making friends. I met a friend in 4th grade, and we are still friends. I was also in a neighborhood girl scout troop, where I had one friend. I'll never forget the girl who pushed off the wrong end of a slide, she was the one who had diabetis who, at every camping trip, would get into the Wonder bread and eat herself into an attack! she also commented often about the way i breathed when we were walking or hiking. I learned to have a thick skin. I began making more friends in jr. high.
I'm 53 years old with cp.
Thanks,
Tamar

I have heard that the smaller school districts can have some problems since their special ed policy setters are relatively untrained. The service coordinator, though, should be able to negotiate what you need.
Strange, I've never had a problem getting Daniel a slightly later start time (due to private therapy appts), but then I've always provided the transportation, so the school doesn't really have to do anything except NOT mark him tardy. My problem has always been getting him EXTENDED services (summer, etc.).
I've homeschooled before, and it sounds a lot easier than it is. Unless the other kids at school are being mean, I recommend keeping her in at least half days so that she can make friends. Otherwise, special needs kids (of any type) can easily become isolated. In Idaho we have the right to selectively homeschool: full days; partial days; one class; just in school for music, PE, and art; etc. If you do homeschool her, consider a local girl scout troop for socialization.
