I am using JAWS 18 and still have similar issues occasionally . I'm not yet ready to blame JAWS yet but perhaps FS or whatever their name is should be aware of the situation.

I find it happens more often while I am using Mozilla Thunderbird, but I imagine it's happened to me while browsing Web pages, too. This is an extremely frustrating issue and I have long thought about posting a message about it. I, too, would appreciate any insight that others can provide and I am also wondering how common this is? There are times when, rather than JAWS simply stopping and restarting, the computer will either crash or suddenly reboot itself for no apparent reason. Could this indicate a hardware conflict, either with the video or sound card?

For example, it happened once again just before I started to write this paragraph. And, while writing this just now, new messages were received by Thunderbird and JAWS ceased talking for about 5 seconds. This happens whenever I am using Thunderbird and new messages are received.
