I don't have DSL myself, but are you using your own modem or do you have 
a modem provided by Verizon? If you got your modem from Verizon, I'd 
think they'd upgrade it for you to one that they can assure will provide 
the proper performance.

I'd also think they could tell you for sure how much of your throughput 
is lost due to deterioration over your line. You might want to check 
your bill or your contract to see what minimum upload/download speeds 
you're paying for.
