Gmail does have a  sent mail folder. I don't think there's a Gmail 
setting to change this, but I would think most email clients would let 
you customize this. I remember in Thunderbird having to change some of 
it's settings to use the right folders in Gmail, but this isn't 
necessary anymore, since Thunderbird now uses the right defaults when 
you create a Gmail account.
