The New York City marathon was amazing, and so were the many recommendations given by several list mates. It was very exciting to raise money and run for Team Gluten Free, and I had at least a few runners with celiac come up to me during the race to say that seeing Team Gluten Free runners made their day!
As far as restaurants, Risotteria on Bleeker street was our favorite. There were many different kinds of risotto and other fare, and I even had a gluten free apple pie. Yes, I bought the whole pie (it was small) and ate it. It was my post marathon treat! Because of their baked gluten free goods, I never made it to a GF bakery, but I had wanted to try Jennifer's Way and other bakeries.
For dinner, Bistanga and Sirio (Italian restaurants in Midtown area) were excellent, and I had a great pizza at Don Antonio's near Broadway (with real pizza dough, not the frozen pre-packaged kind), which was specially prepared in a different area. They also prepared a salad for me to take on the plane.
We also ate at Nizza in the "Hell's Kitchen" area on 9th Avenue between 44th and 45th. Nizza came highly recommended, and while the food was tasty, I unfortunately became ill after eating there (the rash even came out on my face) so I know something was contaminated. I ordered GF linguini with a duck sauce. In hindsight, I should have ordered the Socca "pizza" made from chickpea flour, which might have been safer as that seemed to be what most of the food reviews were about. Needless to say, I did not give the restaurant a second try. I was thankful that I didn't eat there the night before the race.
The last night, we ate at Rosa Mexicano. The table-side guacamole, chips, and enchiladas were delicious! I would highly recommend it!
