Hi folks,
One of the helpful resources for new NVDA users is audio tutorials, and
we’ve seen a number of users record helpful audio tutorials for our
newbie friends. So to kick off the work on the 2015 edition of the audio
tutorials, I’d like to hear from you as to what topics I should cover.
And I can tell you that, with features such as the new exit routine in
upcoming NVDA 2014.4 and other exciting features under development, the
2015 edition of the tutorial will be packed with numerous big and small
changes.
Here’s the outline for the tutorial series so far:
1. Introduction: covers what NVDA is, its features, downloading,
installing and updating NVDA and a brief version history. Nothing new
from 2013 edition.
2. Basics: covers how to start, restart (with or without add-ons)
and exit NVDA, the NVDA modifier key, keyboard commands, desktop and
laptop layout and introduction to touchscreens. It’ll end with a brief
tour of NVDA menu and basic commands. Here the new addition will be
touchscreen gestures and ability to restart NVDA (new in 2014.4).
3. All about objects: defines what an object is, object
hierarchy, object navigation commands, review cursor and review modes,
focus, caret and mouse navigation and examples of object navigation. The
biggest change is a brief intro to review modes.
4. Browsing the web: basic navigation commands, navigation quick
keys, browse versus focus mode, elements list, document review and
objects such as live regions and dialogs. The document review and
various live region announcement are new topics for 2015 edition.
5. Popular applications: covers Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook,
PowerPoint, Firefox, two or more applications with your suggestions and
Windows Store apps. New in 2015 include a brief tour of Outlook’s
Calendar, browse mode like navigation in Word (under development),
announcing formatting changes in Word and other apps.
6. Preferences I: Covers following settings: General Settings,
Synthesizers dialog and samples of speech synthesizers, Voice Settings,
Braille Settings and descriptions of supported braille displays,
Keyboard Settings and Mouse Settings, ending with how to save and
restore settings. As there are new settings in various dialogs, this
section will be revised.
7. Preferences II: Covers Review Cursor, Input Composition, Object
Presentation, Browse Mode, Document Formatting, speech dictionaries and
punctuation, culminating in restoring settings to factory defaults and a
brief intro to Configuration Profiles. Config Profiles might be moved to
section 8.
8. Tools: Covers log viewer, Config Profiles, Reloading Plugins,
Python Console and basics of debugging NVDA.
9. Add-ons: Add-ons Manager and a selection of add-ons based on
user feedback will be covered, as well as starting NVDA without add-ons
and final thoughts.
If you’d like to hear what 2013 edition of the tutorial is like, please

Please let me know if you’d like me to cover additional topics or apps,
and please let the other users (on various lists) know about this
tutorial project and things you’d like me to cover or explain. I’ll try
to finish the tutorial around late February 2015 (right after NVDA
2015.1 is released).
Thanks.
Cheers,
Joseph
