Hi All,
Sometimes Word is very sluggish. I'm using windows 8.1, Jaws 15, and
Word 2013, but I've had this problem with other versions of OS, screen
reader, and Office.
Basically, everything is laggy. If I'm typing quickly, a few letters or
even words get skipped. If I'm reviewing the text, there's a pause of
one to two seconds between the keystroke and the spoken feedback. If I'm
moving through the text quickly, like when I repeatedly press
ctrl+right-arrow, the pause between the last press of the keys and the
beginning of speech may be as much as five to ten seconds. It's almost
as if the computer were saving a very large file in the background or
running an intense virus scan.
The interesting thing is that, if I switch to another program, like
email or the web browser, the other program behaves normally. Then when
I switch back to Word, things slow down again.
This doesn't happen consistently, and it happens with both large and
small files and on both my desktop and my laptop. It's annoying at the
best of times. It's even more annoying when I'm using my computer to
lecture.
I'm wondering if Word is doing something I'm not aware of, redrawing the
screen, showing animations, etc. I've gone through the settings, and
nothing is jumping out at me. I haven't had the problem with NVDA, so
I'm wondering if it's a Jaws+Word issue, but then again, I don't use
NVDA as often in Word, so this could easily be coincidence.
Does anyone have any ideas about what may be happening? The sighted
people I've asked haven't noticed anything special on the screen.
Ciao
