NVDA is free, so there's no reason not to download it and give it a try.
If you end up lining it and using it, even if it's just as a backup
screen reader, consider donating some money to the NVDA project.
Also, I use NVDA whenever I boot up into Windows, and I don't have a
problem with it's responsiveness. I don't use the MS voices, but rather
use the eSpeak voices. If you're having trouble with it's responsiveness
or you want to use a different voice then I'd suggest checking out and
tweaking the various NVDA settings.
Also, when using a new screen reader, I'd suggest looking over the
documentation and being patient. It's pretty easy to pick up as a former
JAWS user, but there are some differences.
