Harry,
If you don't want to buy Word, you should be able to open your docx
files in Libre Office or Open Office. Both are free, and both have
accessible text editors. I have more experience with Open Office, but I
don't use either program regularly. I know both open docx files, but I
think only Libre Office saves as docx. I can't swear to this last on a
stack of bibles.
