I'd second Rick's recommendation.  I leave a pc on while I am awake -- 
most days -- and we've never seen a power bill that was out of sight 
because of it --
usually the furnace or AC running during a cold or warm spell wil, of 
course, make a major difference.
Look at it this way -- do you plug and unplug your fridge?

If it starts running sluggish, then II would reboot; but sleep mode seems 
to give me the same sort of issues you've experienced.
A pc these days isn't a powerhog.
