Thanks all for your thoughts. The only reason I'm wondering if it's a
software issue is that, for the few minutes after setup and before the
system update, I had a solid internet connection and was able to
download the new Windows version and something else.
I don't remember if the unit has an ethernet port, so I'll check that.
If I were to test the wireless card with an ethernet cable, do I just
plug the cable in, or is there other setup to do?

If it has an Ethernet port, you could always try connecting it through that port and test to see if you have the same intermittent connectivity issues. If you do return it, check out the Dell XPS 13" laptop. Very thin and sleek.

It said my firewall could be getting in the way, so I went in to the area where you allow things to get past the firewall, and I checked/allowed a bunch of stuff. I restarted the computer when I was done.

This time it said my settings were fine but my NDS server (or something like that) wasn't responding. I found an article with troubleshooting tips, like reset the IP and find new drivers. I started to try the first tip, but got stuck with steps that didn't quite match up before I got far enough to make any changes to the system.

This time the Windows troubleshooter said my gateway had been closed (or something like that) and that the problem was now fixed. This time, I was able to stay online a long time, but the internet was incredibly slow. I was downloading the Dropbox app, not my files, and the download took about 20 minutes, then failed because I lost my connection again.

I have the feeling it's something I can fix, but I'm not sure.
