My experience is that, as of Windows 8, the startup sound mostly doesn't 
happen. I have a vague memory of going into the control panel (probably 
Hardware and Sounds > Sounds > Sound Schemes) to turn the sound on. I 
rarely hear it, though. I do sometimes hear it when I restart and when I 
update, but even in those cases, I only hear it occasionally.


As I write this, I realize I haven't heard it in a longish time.
