I believe the public folder no longer applies although it hasn't gone away.

Basically, you just copy files into Dropbox, and your computer uploads them to the server automatically. If you want to remove them, just delete them or cut and copy them somewhere else. Keep in mind that, if you remove a file from the Dropbox folder on one computer, it gets deleted from Dropbox on all your other computers. To share a link to the file, put the file in the Public folder, and use the Applications key to go into the Dropbox submenu, pressing enter on the Copy item. After that use ctrl+V to paste the link somewhere else. I think you are redirected to the Dropbox website if you try sharing a folder.

Paying for the space can be done once a year or month by month. I wanted to share a couple of very large files with someone once, So I subscribed for a month. In a nutshell, I chose the monthly subscription option and cancelled it a few days later. Since I'd already paid 10 dollars, I had lots of storage space for 30 days. At the end of that time, I went back to the regular amount of space.
