I have had the problem with this kind of thing all the way back to XP. I had to go into view and put it back to normal. Thing I couldn't figure out was how it changed in the first place. I also just had something happen in Vista where my contacts got like that and for a long time when I would access them from my mail program the whole computer would freeze up.
