A few years ago, I bought a talking calculator from either Independent
Living Aids or Adaptations, which is the store for the San Francisco
Lighthouse for the Blind. I don't remember the brand or the price, but I
remember thinking it was way, way cheaper than I expected. It's roughly
the size of an iPhone or Victor Stream, and it runs on two tripple-A
batteries, which I change maybe once a year. I think it's technically
always on: what I think of as the On button is actually a Talk button,
and if I slide that switch even farther to the right, it talks louder.
The functions are pretty basic, probably comparable to the Sharp.

Here's the Talking Calculator page for ILA:

And the one I have sounds like the Pocket Size Talking Calculator
(Black)--Item #: 276974.

Hope this helps.
