I agree that first-letter navigation would be amazing in Chrome bookmarks. It's not acceptable that this isn't the norm. I have found a work-around that works quite well with a bit of configuration.
I like to rename my bookmarks. All my personal website bookmarks start with "ATI," all of my news sites, start with "News," etc. With my bookmark naming scheme, I can use first letter navigation to find bookmarks in the Chrome bookmarks bar.
As an example, I have the following bookmark names at the start of my bookmarks list:
1 - Access Technology Institute
ATI - AT Trainers
ATI - Dreamhost Web Panel
2 - Andrea's Website
Books - Bookshare
Books - Bard
And it continues.
Using the Bookmark bar, you can go directly to a website from within a bookmarks list. Tapping 1 takes me right to my webpage manager login. Tapping 2 takes me to my daughter's web page login. I have the rest named with repetitive letter schemes so I can navigate among them with first letter navigation.
I know this may take a bit of work on the front-end, but it made my life much easier after the initial work and now I just use this scheme to name new bookmarks.
To access the bookmarks, use the bookmarks bar. Toggle the bookmarks bar on and off with CTRL-SHIFT-B. You want to show the Bookmarks Bar. You can also configure this settings in Chrome Settings.
With the Bookmarks Bar enabled, follow these steps:
1. Focus in the Chrome Toolbar ALT-SHIFT-T
2. navigate to the Chrome Bookmark Bar F6 (If focus is placed in an edit field, you're bookmarks bar isn't displayed, press CTRL-SHIFT-B and start over)
3. Press TAB until focus is on your Bookmarks Folder
4. Open the drop-down list with ENTER
Your bookmarks are displayed in the drop-down list.
If you've used the naming scheme I recommend:
1. You can launch a shortcut by pressing it's unique first letter or number
2. You can navigate among bookmarks sharing the same first letter with first letter navigation. Press ENTER to launch the bookmark
I admit this isn't perfect but it's a nice work-around until Google gets its act together.
