There are still very afordable talking kitchen thermometers available. 
Take a look at www.BlindMiceMegaMall.com.  I forget the range, but it goes 
below zero and up to like 540 degrees F.  It is tens of dollars, maybe 30 
or 40 bucks.

If you want to get more sophisticated, you can look at the iGrill, which 
is a bluetooth thermometer that works with your iPhone and I use it while 
barbecuing or smoking meets.  You can find it on amazon.
