Which version of word?
There is something called "protected view" that has to be turned off. I
don't know if that helps. Let us know what turns out to be the answer.

Thanks, Howard. I tried your suggestion of looking at the properties in the
documents folder, and it listed that box as partially checked, so I
unchecked it, but the Word files that were read only are still that. I
guess I'll call the Microsoft access desk and see if they have any ideas.
Thanks again.
Harvey

Try looking at the properties of each file individually. On the general
page of the properties dialogue box near the bottom there is a check box to
make the file read only, if checked, on check it and try the file.
To get to the properties, choose the properties option from the file menu
while looking at the files in my documents.
