The way my 590 is set up, pushing the upper left button to the
left of the power button announces the frequency. When I press
the mode button then immediately push the upper left button, the
speech will shut up so you don't have to hear the frequency. You
can interrupt the speech at any time by just pushing that button
when the speech starts to talk. Good luck and 73, Jim WA6EKS

Mine always does that.

If there is a way to tell it not too, I haven't found it.
