To clarify, I have the TS-590s, not the newest model. I bought this one when
R&L had them on a closeout sale, and so, I've had it a while, but I just
never opened the box and set it up until recently because I didn't have an
antenna up yet. Anyway, it is going back to be repaired.

Since I sent out my earlier messages about the transmitter not putting out
anything, I decided to do a more thorough job checking out the receiver. I
really had not paid a lot of attention to the receiver since it seemed to be
working OK on the ham bands when I was trying to figure out why the
transmitter was not putting out any power. Well, now that I have paid closer
attention to the receiver, I discovered it isn't working correctly either.
It is not hearing anything once I tune outside the ham bands. For instance,
when I enter the frequency for the low end of the AM broadcast band and tune
across the entire AM band, I do not hear one single AM station. We have a
local ESPN Sports station here on 1450 KHZ (1.45 MHZ), and I hear nothing.
When I enter in any of the frequencies for WWV, I hear nothing. When I am
on, for example, 10 MHZ, and remove the antenna, there is absolutely no
difference in the background noise level of the receiver, whether the
antenna is connected or not. However, the receiver seems to be working on
all of the ham bands.. totally mysterious!!

Thanks again everyone for your feedback and suggestions. You have helped me
determine for certain that I have to send this TS-590s out to be repaired.
I'm calling R&L first thing in the morning.

Oh, in the process of checking and double checking everything and reading
everything I could that might give me a clue about why this rig wasn't
working, I ran across something that indicated that the TS-590, and probably
most all of our modern rigs, have a diagnostic program built into them, and
if you know how to access it, you can get the rig to run a series of
diagnostic tests on itself and display a code that reveals any problems
associated with that particular transceiver. It would sure be interesting to
know more about that. A friend of mine told me that he saw a service tech
hold down a sequence of keys on his transceiver that brought up a diagnostic
routine that told the service tech exactly what was wrong with his rig
before he ever opened the case. He read the code off the display, open up
the transceiver, replaced two modules, put the case back together, and the
rig has worked just fine every since. Do any of you know anything more about
this?

On my last post:

If Ron has a new "just out of the box" 590, I would guess it is the new SG
(or whatever it is) that replaced the 590S. If that is the case, the menus
may not line up between the 2 versions.

Although there is probably a TX lockout menu in the new version, it might be
a different number than 74.
