Yes, it eliminates selective fading distortion by insertaing some additional 
carrier on to an AM signal and it also filters out which ever sideband you 
choose to eliminate splatter from an adjacent channel signal. I should've 
used the complete name which is synchronous detector.

I remember the sync detector in the sony 2010 was so good that I could 
listen to KYW on 1060 in Philly, a 150 miles away and eliminate most of the 
interference from a 1050 station right here in town. They can be quite 
useful. The k3 receiver has a superb sync detector as well. Lou  WA3MIX
