I certainly remember his call and worked him many times, but didn't know
about that.

Do you remember a guy in Des Moines by the call of WA0KMC? I forget his
name at the moment but he had a device that when you called him long
distance, it kept his phone ringing at the phone company. I called him once
just to see if it worked and talked to him for an hour on my ham shack
personal phone. I never got a bill.
