I believe this is a throw back from the original DOS file system days.
Every folder, which used to be called a directory, has two system files
which is how the kernal or underlying system can find and map these
directories. In Windows these two files are hidden. If you were to go
to the command prompt though and type the old command "dir" you would
see in the resulting list two files at the top which do not show normally.
Its fun to go to the command prompt and play with the old DOS commands.
They all still work, and sometimes can make it easier to do certain
unusual things.
