Hi all,


This question comes from another list. I'm posting because I think we 
have a linguist among us and because this is an issue I'm interested in 
for myself. I don't know which versions of Jaws and Windows are being 
used, though I suspect he's fairly up to date.


The question with some edits is below. Thanks for any wisdom.

I've noticed that Jaws is often inconsistent about how it reads special 
characters and example words/sentences in

linguistics papers and theses available online in PDF.

A good illustration where Jaws appears to mangle text that displays
properly for a sighted reader is example (1) on page 30 of this PDF,
though the problem seems pervasive:

By contrast, example words/sentences are nearly or entirely legible in
this PDF, from the same author:

Does anyone know what might be going on here and how to address it?
