Jeff,

The wifi issue you're having at the hotel may be more immediate,
interference caused by something in the room.

I have wifi at home. It works better in some rooms than in others, and
it works better in some parts of the room than in others. For example,
in my bedroom, it works well on my bed, on my nightstand, and in my
comfy chair, and it works poorly on the table and shelves near the TV
and stereo. Likewise, in my home office, it works well everywhere except
in the corner of the room where my printer stand is.

Ciao

My guess is is that one of the sites that the phone is connecting to for the Wi-Fi isn't working very well or very slow but another side of the bed it's working just fine.
