The book has been in the works a long time. When we started it, Lollipop
had been released so we focused on that, with lots of comments like, "In
earlier versions of Android, do X or Y instead." By the time we
finished, Nougat was rolling out to devices, so I had a chance to use
the Nougat prereleases and (for a couple of weeks) even the official
version.
Basically, the book emphasizes Lollipop through Nougat (5.x to 7.0), but
it also makes reference to Jelly Bean and Kit-Kat (4.1 to 4.4). Our
testing devices were pure Android, but we also included comments like
"On modified versions of the OS, you might need to do this other thing."
In other words, we tried to make the book as useful to as many people as
possible, but we know it isn't perfect.
