Yes, you're quite right. This country won't give braille the consideration
it deserves because the professionals insist it isn't a language, but only a
code. Guess they love their pointless battles, but fortunately we have seen
some small gains here too. For example, braille signs are mandated here in
all taxies. It must happen because it's the law. Of course, rugby players
are exempted, hi hi.

That's been a controversy within the deaf community for years.  I know of
schools that prohibit the teaching or use of sign language and they tie the
students' hands if they catch them using it.  I think it is comparable to
denying a blind student Braille or some other tool they need to function.  I
think they should be encouraged to lip read whenever possible, but if
signing helps them communicate then let them have it.

I agree.
In any walk of life you have to use whatever tools are available to you.

I had a big fall out with a neighbour who is a retired teacher of deaf
children as she was bigoted that signing should be banned, and only lip
reading used!
