For more than 93 years, the American Civil Liberties Union 
Foundation (ACLUF) has been at the forefront of virtually every 
major battle for civil liberties and equal justice in this 
country.  Principled and nonpartisan, the ACLU has offices in all 
50 states, Washington, DC and Puerto Rico, and brings together 
the country’s largest team of public interest lawyers, 
lobbyists, communication strategists, members and activists in 
the advancement of equality, fairness, and freedom, especially 
for the most vulnerable in our society.

The Communications Department of the National office in New York 
City is seeking applicants for the full-time position of Digital 
Media Associate.

OVERVIEW

The ACLU places great emphasis on the role of communications in 
framing the debate on its issues, building support, and 
increasing the impact of its work.   The Communications 
Department is responsible for promoting the ACLU’s mission, its 
brand and its programs through the media, multi-faceted 
campaigns, digital and social media communications, publications 
and events.
The Communications Department is seeking a Digital Media 
Associate to join its Online Engagement unit.  The Digital Media 
Associate is responsible for ACLU’s social media channels, 
including producing and posting content, growing and engaging 
audiences, and developing campaign and promotion strategies.  
Reporting to the Director of Online Engagement, the Digital Media 
Associate will work closely with staff across the organization to 
achieve the ACLU’s social media goals.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


  *   Maintain ACLU’s presence and profiles across primary 
social media channels.
  *   Write and edit posts and campaign content; maintain the 
publishing calendar and schedule posts.
  *   Develop social media campaign and promotion strategies.
  *   Collaborate with Communications and program staff to 
identify high-impact opportunities to increase the visibility of 
our advocacy, programmatic and legislative work, and to generate 
email list and social media audience growth.
  *   Monitor social media trends, and emerging practices.  
Evaluate social media platforms for adoption by ACLU.
  *   Serve as ACLU’s social media champion and expert; train 
staff on developing their social media presence; work with ACLU 
Affiliates to implement social media best practices.
  *   Manage online advertising on Facebook, Reddit, and Twitter.
  *   Provide off-hour coverage for social media posts.  Assist 
with weekend web and social media publishing as part of a 
rotating coverage schedule.
  *   As-needed, assist with web content publishing to ACLU.org.
  *   Track and monitor the success of social media and online 
engagement initiatives.
  *   Assist with special projects including online actions and 
advocacy campaigns, live social media events, and communications 
campaigns to support ACLU programs.
  *   Work as part of a multidisciplinary team that includes 
digital communications, online campaigners, web production, and 
online fundraising.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS


  *   Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of three years of related 
experience or an equivalent level of work experience is required.
  *   Excellent verbal, writing and interpersonal communications 
skills; strong attention to detail, ability to write and deliver 
work product under deadlines, and commitment to high quality 
standards.
  *   Experience developing social media content for issue-based, 
nonprofit, or political advocacy organizations; familiarity with 
a broad range of social media strategies.
  *   Significant experience managing professional social media 
profiles on Facebook and Twitter.  Experience using and 
evaluating emerging social media platforms.
  *   Basic experience with HTML, CSS and Photoshop.
  *   Ability to manage several complex projects simultaneously, 
often under tight deadlines.
  *   Must be self-motivated, demonstrate grace under pressure 
and possess the ability to work well both independently as well 
as within a team.

  *   Demonstrated commitment to the mission of the ACLU.

COMPENSATION

The ACLU offers a generous and comprehensive compensation and 
benefits package, commensurate with experience and within 
parameters of the ACLU compensation scale.
