No but it requires much less of everything.
I don't think the hex was ever marketed as a replacement for a full sized
mono bander.
Not everybody wants or neds or can afford a world class contesting station.
That is what makes them world class. If everybody had one, they would just
be average.
I just drop down to CW, take my 12 DB gain over phone, and have fun.
That works for me, but it wouldn't work for a dedicated contestor.
What I don't understand is, why don't a bunch of guys setup and run a remote
station from say Costa Rica, over the Internet.
You could get something that would work better than anything radiating
further away from the equator.
Kind of like timeshare radio.
You could have everything including multiple stations for contesting. I
wonder how well it could work.
Just the savings on airfare and lodging would make it worth it.

Subject: Further on my last post

One other thing that I forgot to mention in my last post on hex beams, is
that Stan has been using a hex beam in Honolulu due to HOA restrictions.
Instead of going thru the trouble of disassembling it for shipment to
Florida, he decided to give it away to someone in Honolulu. He has told me
on a number of occasions that his hex beam had worked fairly well, but he
did say that it didn't perform anywhere near as well as traditional yagis
that he used at his east coast stations prior to moving to Hawaii some 20
years ago.
