Colin, you are absolutely correct here. My friend Stan that begins
construction on his super station in Florida in July, receives emails from
goofballs complaining that he is spending several hundred grand on his ham
station, instead of on something else. They apparently think that their
preference of spending money is more right than his. Stan has told me
several times that he has dreamed of having a super station all of his life,
and now that he is retired and can afford it, he is going to have it. I say
more power to him.

Alan is right.
However, one can make the analogy with cars:
you can own a perfectly serviceable car, maybe a few years old, but runs
well and gets you from point A to B in comfort and without too much
maintenance. You may spend a few thousand on this car as an initial outlay
of money.

Or, you can own a ferari, lamborgini or other high performance sports car
which will do precisely the same as your 4000 dollar car, that is, get you
from point A to B in comfort...

Except, with the family sedan you won't have the bragging rights, or the
sheer power and performance offered by the other high end cars.
The same is true with ham radio.
If you want the super high performance, you pay for it, and if you are
satisfied with the sedan, no problem. They'll both get you on the air and
making contacts...but one will help you make thousands, perhaps hundreds of
thousands of contacts, and the other will be good for a couple hundred a
year. It's perspective and one isn't any more right or wrong than the
other.
Those who can afford it, have the right to have it. Those who can't afford
it must be satisfied with what they can have. Simple.

If you get a SteppIr, you will love it. The two SteppIrs that I have owned
have been the best antennas I have had in my 50 plus years of being a ham.
Ham radio is an expensive hobby, all things considered. If your goal is to
have a high performance world class station, it will definitely cost you.

Hey gang,

I'm making plans to own a Stepir. This will mean playing bingo, five nights

a week, for the next three years. Multiple cards, each game. (smiles).
