Tom,
I think you are using JAWS. Have you set the JAWS options/soundcards
drop down menu to use the pc's default sound card? It solved the
problem for me long ago. No matter what goes on in Windows, or what
sound card Windows decides to call the "default", JAWS will always use
the pc's sound card.
This has worked on both XP and Windows 7.
BTW, sorry I took your name in vain earlier. I should have just said
