Is there any indication which mode has been selected when toggling the mode
button, other than the visual display?

Or, do we simply have to figure it out by how the tuner acts?

I think I would prefer semi-automatic, like you.

Tom,

I like to use semi, and push the button on the radio instead of having 
it sense RF and tune automatically.   Just my preference, try it both 
ways and see what you like.

Unless front panel layout has changed over the years, the mode button is the
leftmost of the lower row of 4 buttons.  Pressing this will toggle between
the 2 modes.
