Also, for what it's worth, the radio and software will work fine with a 
usb to serial adapter.    The usb and serial ports on the radio are 
independent of each other, so it is possible to run 2 software packages 
at the same time, if that ever suits your needs.    Maybe a logger on 
one connection and control program on the other.
