David,
The TQ6 and the whole encryption process has nothing to do with logging into
LOTW. It's for the "TQSL" software that you load on your PC. TQSL is used
for digitally signing log files that you then upload to LOTW. You can do
these uploads directly via TQSL or most logging software packages have an
automatic interface to TQSL on your PC so, in effect, the logging software
runs TQSL and manages the TQSL upload for you. That's the way AC Log does
it.

Logging on to LOTW itself does not require any of the encryption
certificates. You just set up a login and password as you might with many
other websites.

There are great quick start files on the LOTW website. Go to
http://lotw.arrl.org then click on the "get started today" link.
