I don't remember how I got PDFs to open in Adobe in windows 8.1. Try this:

1. Go into your Sandy folder, and find a PDF. Don't open it.

2. Press the right-Windows key, and down-arrow to Open with.

3. Use right-arrow once, then down-arrow to find an option that says 
something like, Choose Default Program and press enter on it.

4. Arrow through your options and press OK.
