Personally I say if you're on a tight budget, when deciding where to put the
most effort and what not, coax is the one thing I'd never get used. bad coax
can make a good radio and antenna run like crap, good coax and decent
antenna can make even a cheap old radio work great. You never know what
you're getting with coax, I've known people who said their coax was great
everything working perfect. Then, when they changed to new coax they found
out it hadn't worked all that great for years but was falling off gradually
so it wasn't noticeable. I'm on a very tight budget, thanks to a lot of
generosity I've had most of my antennas given to me. I rebuilt them and
replaced all hardware, cleaned up anything that needed it so they went up
looking like new. Even my 2 meter beam someone told me was junk and beyond
worth while, looks brand new and works better than it ever did. My radio's
I've had for a while and they're not bad anyway, but the coax, I'm still
using coax I used at my last home, but it was new then and even at that I'm
only running the left overs from that installation that were never used and
the one or 2 reused peaces are ones that were inside the house. Nothing that
was ever outside has been reused here and now most of it's outside so no
coax will leave here and get reused. With the value of copper these days I'd
probably turn it in and get the money to buy new, at least a couple runs.
lol.
