Jim,

There's absolutely no risk to upgrading to the latest version of the 
firmware.  Even if the upgrade doesn't work, you just rerun the software.

The benefits of the new firmware are: more feedback from the speech unit, a 
way to enter split frequencies, and independent receive and transmit 
equalizer settings for each mode.  Some people have reported improved 
receiver performance, but I haven't noticed that, and it's not mentioned in 
the list of enhancements.  I'm quite happy with the new firmware, and 
recommend it highly.
