Thanks, Lloyd.

I may start doing UEB translations now, just to be ahead of the curve on
this.

I have version 11.1 of the Duxbury software, which is maybe two or three
years old, but should at least get me started until I can get the University
to purchase the newest upgrade.

There is a series of templates in Duxbury, and some of them use different
translation tables. I suppose that in a couple of years they might set UEB
as the default, but at the moment it is one of many choices. Getting an
up-to-date version of DBT may get you a few corrections in the translation
table, but you won't be far off if you use a version from 5 years ago. I
have been running all of my translations, as well as setting Window-Eyes
braille translation, to UEB for more than a year.

Lloyd:

Thanks again for the info on UEB.

I'll check the Braille Authority web site you provided for more details.

I guess I have one question for now.

Do you know if the latest versions of Duxbury automatically do UEB
translations by default? Or, will we be given a choice between standard
Grade II. Braille, and UEB?

I certainly can call Duxbury Systems on this, but thought maybe you would
have an idea.

I am way behind on my e-mail and need to head for work, so a longer
message may come later.
The US was the last major English-speaking country to adopt Unified English
Braille, promulgated by the International Council on English Braille,
www.iceb.org . Britain is supposedly already changing. The US starts using
it officially in January, 2016.
Joe Sullivan was part of UEB development from the beginning, so Duxbury has
had a UEB translation table for about 10 years. Most notetakers and screen
readers made in the last 5 years can be put into UEB mode. The LibLouis
translator, which is behind the braille in NVDA and other products, already
can do UEB. NLS will be distributing a 4-page document with UEB differences
before 2016. A few braille books on BARD, transcribed by CNIB, are already
available in UEB. More info at
  www.braille-authority.org/ueb .

Tom

Can't tell you too much about it, but the point is that the Braille
translation programs will all print in the same format, such as Duxbury.

Hi, everyone.

I hope this isn't considered too off topic, but I am thinking it should be
ok since many of us use Braille for amateur radio applications, as well as
other personal and professional purposes.

I have been reading occasional e-mails on the Jaws list about the new UEB
(Unified English Braille) system that has been adopted by the World Braille
Organization.

Can someone tell me how UEB will differ from the standard Grade II. Braille
we have been using for so many years?

When is the transition supposed to occur.

Finally, does anyone know if Braille translation software programs like
Duxbury will support this new format, and when or if the old format will be
phased out?

Is there a web site where I can learn more about UEB?

I'm hoping that any info provided on this list benefits more than just me.
