Harry,
You may be able to adjust sound volume from the system tray. I know you
can do it in Windows 8 and 10, and I'm 99% sure I remember doing this in
Windows 7. Go to the system tray with ins+F11 or with Windows+b. Arrow
down to the Speakers item. Press the space bar to activate, then press
down-arrow repeatedly to turn the sound down. When you're done, just
press Windows+D to get back to the desktop.
Maybe the hearphones have a volume control?
If your keyboard has extra buttons, two may be for volume-up and
volume-down. Since I discovered the ones on my Microsoft Natural 4,000
Ergonomic keyboard, I've been a hppy gal.
