A beam would be hard, because it needs a way to turn and a stable platform,
but for now, a wire with a ground wire the same length would be easy, cheap
and workable.
You don't need the comparitively low gain of an HF beam to make solid
contacts.
Getting even 6 DB of gain on HF takes a lot of metal in the sky.
The digital modes make contacts far below the noise level, so 20 watts is
the standard power, anything above that is unnecessary and bad manners.

Yes, I do know CW isn't a requirement, but it still would be nice to = know.
as for using voice, I'd love to do that, and also text protocols = such as
the one you mentioned.
As for setting up antennas and such, that's what I'm currently debating. =
I'll be switching residence soon, and so I'll hold off on HF until that =
happens, but where I currently am has a fantastic tree branch 90 feet or =
so up, so I was hoping to throw a tribander up there to at least give me =
some decent coverage.

Of course you should know that CW is not now and hasn't for some time,=20
been a requirement for HF operation--either for testing or (if it comes=20
to it) for any operation at all.
You can use voice, and if you are into computers as you indicate, you=20 can
use the various digital modes such as PK31.
Of course for decent HF operation, you need a fair amount of space for=20
erecting external antennas. You _can_ use indoor antennas if you have=20 no
other alternative and you can also use the various remote bases that=20 you
can access through the Internet for HF if all other on site=20 operation is
impossible.
I am wondering what kind of residence you have. If it is a house with a =
backyard, you're probably good to go once you decide on an antenna=20 and/or
preferred bands of operation.
