Hi, everyone.
For those interested, here is info from the new-gen VR Stream manual on
adjusting the record volume level.
Thanks to Wayne for locating the info.
I'll have to experiment around with this, but it looks like my initial
problem may be solvable.

Recording Volume Adjustment
There are three recording volume adjustment modes which can be selected in
the recording
configuration menu using keys
4 or 6
: Fixed, Manual, and Automatic. In the Fixed mode, the Stream's recording
volume
is fixed at a pre-set level. In the Manual mode, you can select the
recording volume
from a range of 10 volume levels. From the Notes bookshelf, the Manual
recording
volume can be accessed by pressing the
Power
button several times and using the up and down arrow keys to adjust the
value. While
a recording is in progress use keys
2 and 8
to adjust the recording volume, and press key
5
to go back to the default value of 6 (no spoken feedback will be given when
the recording
is in progress). The Automatic mode slightly increases the recording volume
when the audio signal is too low, and lowers it when the audio signal is
too loud,
thereby preventing clipping in the recording.
