Jim, in general an external tuner will tune higher SWRs than the internal
tuner. I know my MFJ 993B will match SWRs that the TS-590 internal tuner
won't.

Subject: Question about using external tuner with the TS590

Hi fellow listers, Does Kenwood make an external tuner designed
for the TS590, or how necessary is that considering that the 590
has it's own internal tuner? I know the TS480 didn't seem to have
as much tolerance for higher SWR's as the 590, though it's not
good to run into a high mis-match in any case. I am still using
a small LG external tuner in line with the 590 but I don't seem
to get as much action from it when tuning up as I used to get
when using the TS480. 73, Jim WA6EKS
