Hi,

When Jim, KY2D, got written up in the February CQ Magazine, well, that was pretty cool.

Except, I thought, common wisdom was that Zinio, the platform that CQ uses for their electronic magazine, was not accessible.

Well, some of Zinio’s magazines may not be (I subscribed to a dog magazine that seems to not be), but I’m happy to report that CQ is pretty readable with the Zinio app for iThingies.

This doesn’t mean it’s perfect, but it’s doable with a bit of patience.

For example, select the text table of contents button. The labels should make sense. Then, select an article by double tapping it, then double tapping the “Read” button.

You can then use the usual two finger swipe down to start continuous reading of the article.

Here’s where things are a little odd. If you stop reading, you’ll have to scroll down pages until you get back to your stopping point, because if not, you’ll be at the top of the article again.

Also, to get back to the table of contents, double tap the title of the article at the top of the screen, then explore the screen at the bottom to find the TOC_Text button to get back to the table of contents.

I’ve just started playing with this today. I subscribed back at the ARRL convention, but my subscription didn’t go active until today. Had to call CQ to get that worked out, i think they might have accidentally lost it or something.

Anyway, at the ARRL convention, Rich let me turn Voiceover on on his iPhone to see if articles would read. When I saw they did, I took the calculated risk of subscribing.

So far, I really like CQ. It’s a ham radio magazine written in English. There’s something to interest just about everyone, too. And $27/year doesn’t seem unreasonable to me.
