Linda,
The knocking sound could be some sort of interference from any number of radios, TV, appliances, in your apartment or in one close to you.
When I tune my HF radio around, when I get to a certain frequency, I hear that noise on my 2-meter radio.
You could always try turning off various radios, TV, appliances in your apartment one at a time and see if you can find what is causing the problem.
Now days with so many radios, wireless telephones, gawd only knows what could be causing the problem.
Maybe it is the power company’s new smart meters they are installing all over the place.
