May try taking the mic apart if contact cleaner doesn't help.

I wonder if the rubber pad just gets too old and inflexible to work any

The rubber pad with the buttons on it is a solid pad, I don't think there's
much you can do without taking the whole mic apart but maybe taking it apart
and cleaning behind the butter button pad, on the board will help? It's just
a thought.
