1870 - The first civil rights Enforcement Act, which protects the
voting and civil rights of African Americans, is passed by
Congress. It provides stiff penalties for public officials
and private citizens who deprive citizens of the suffrage
and civil rights. The measure authorizes the use of the
U.S. Army to protect these rights.
1909 - The first NAACP conference is held at the United Charities
Building in New York City with 300 African Americans and
whites in attendance. Ida B. Wells-Barnett, while speaking
at the conference, condemns lynching as a "blight upon our
nation, mocking our laws and disgracing our Christianity."
1917 - One of the first jazz records, "The Darktown Strutter's
Ball," is released. It was written by songwriter and
musician, Shelton Brooks. It will become Brooks' most
famous song.
1931 - Shirley Verrett is born in New Orleans, Louisiana. She will
become an operatic mezzo-soprano known worldwide for her
compelling performance in Carmen. She will be a star at the
world�s great opera houses, including the Metropolitan
Opera, La Scala, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the
Bolshoi Opera, the Paris Opera, the San Francisco Opera, the
Vienna Staatsoper, and the Lyric Opera of Chicago. She will
appear at the Metropolitan opera for more than two decades.
She will be the recipient of many honors and awards, among
them the Marian Anderson Award, Naumburg Award, and the
Sullivan Award; and fellowships from numerous foundations
including Ford, John Hay Whitney, and Martha Baird
Rockefeller. She will receive honorary doctorates from Holy
Cross College in Worcester, Massachusetts, and Northeastern
University in Boston. She will join the faculty at the
University of Michigan in 1996, becoming the James Earl
Jones Distinguished University Professor of Music. She will
join the ancestors on November 5, 2010.
1955 - The U.S. Supreme Court passes a second desegregation ruling,
demanding "all deliberate speed" be used in the
desegregation of public schools.
1961 - Judge Irving Kaufman orders the Board of Education of New
Rochelle, New York to integrate their schools.
1961 - Chuck Berry's amusement park, Berryland, opens near Saint
Louis, Missouri.
1964 - Darryl Matthews McDaniels is born in Harlem, New York. He will
be better known by his stage name DMC. He will become a musician
and rapper. He will be a founding member of the hip hop group
Run-D.M.C., and will be considered one of the pioneers of hip hop
culture. In 1984, the trio will release their self-titled debut
album and become very successful in the hip-hop industry. The
group's success will continue to grow and reach its peak with
their third album Raising Hell. The album will go to No. 6 on the
Billboard 200 and No. 1 on the Top Rhythm & Blues/Hip-Hop Albums
chart, making Run-D.M.C. the most popular hip-hop group at the
time.
1972 - Christian McBride is born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He will
become a jazz bassist, composer and arranger. He will appear on
more than 300 recordings as a sideman, and is a six-time Grammy
Award winner. He will perform and record with a number of jazz
musicians and ensembles, including Freddie Hubbard, McCoy Tyner,
Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, Joe Henderson, Diana Krall, Roy
Haynes, Chick Corea, Wynton Marsalis, Eddie Palmieri, Joshua
Redman, and Ray Brown's "SuperBass" with John Clayton, as well as
with pop, hip-hop, soul and classical musicians like Sting, Paul
McCartney, Celine Dion, Isaac Hayes, The Roots, Queen Latifah,
Kathleen Battle, Renee Fleming, Carly Simon, Bruce Hornsby, and
James Brown.
1975 - Merle Dandridge is born in Okinawa, Japan. She will become an actress
and singer performing in a number of stage productions, including
Broadway musicals Jesus Christ Superstar, Spamalot, and Rent. She is
widely known for her role as Alyx Vance in Half-Life 2. She will also
be known for her recurring role on television series such as Sons of
Anarchy and The Night Shift. In 2016, she will begin starring as
Grace Greenleaf in the Oprah Winfrey Network drama series, Greenleaf.
She will play Papa Ge in the 2017 revival of Once on this Island,
until January 8, 2018, so she could shoot her television show Greenleaf.
1979 - Zimbabwe proclaims its independence.
1986 - Juaquin James Malphurs is born in Jamaica, Queens, New York. He will be
better known as Waka Flocka Flame, a rapper. Signing to 1017 Brick Squad
and Warner Bros. Records in 2009, he will become a mainstream artist
with the release of his singles "O Let's Do It", "Hard in da Paint", and
"No Hands", with the latter peaking at number 13 on the US Billboard Hot
100. His debut studio album Flockaveli will be released in 2010. His
second studio album Triple F Life: Friends, Fans & Family will be
released in 2012 and be preceded by the lead single "Round of Applause".
1987 - John Dotson is named publisher of the Boulder, Colorado,
"Daily Camera." It is one of many distinctions for the
noted journalist, including being the first African
American reporter for Newsweek magazine and founding, in
the mid-1970's, the Institute for Journalism Education,
dedicated to training minority journalists.
1987 - Curtis Williams, Jr. is born in Los Angeles, California. He will become
an actor. He will play Nicholas Peterson on the Warner Brothers 1990s
sitcom The Parent Hood. He will be a regular guest on the NBC Tonight
Show with Jay Leno and will appear over 12 times on the late night talk
show. Too young to drive at the time, Jay Leno gave Curtis his first
Go-Kart on live television. He was featured on the "Hottest child stars
of TV and movies" cover of Jet Magazine in 1997. He will win the Young
Artist Award in 1996, Young Artist Award for best performance in a
Comedy/Drama in 1997, and was nominated for the best Artist Award for
Comedy/Drama in 1998. In 1997 he will sign a deal with Reebok, which
includes wearing their merchandise and apparel. He will graduate from
the California State University, Northridge with a bachelor's degree in
Cinema Television.
1989 - Cito Gaston is named manager of the Toronto Blue Jays of
baseball's American League.
1996 - Normani Kordei Hamilton is born in Atlanta, Georgia. She will become
a singer and dancer. She will be a member of the girl group Fifth Harmony.
In 2017, she will be a finalist in season 24 of Dancing with the Stars.
Her first single as a soloist, the 2018 duet "Love Lies" with Khalid, will
be recorded for the film Love, Simon, and reach number 9 on the US Billboard
Hot 100. Normani will later be featured on songs from Jessie Reyez and Quavo.
She will also collaborate with Calvin Harris on the two-single EP Normani x
Calvin Harris, and release the single "Waves" featuring 6lack in November of
2018. Her song with Sam Smith, "Dancing with a Stranger" will be released in
January 2019, becoming her second top ten hit on the US Billboard Hot 100.
Normani's debut solo album is set to be released in early 2019 by RCA/Keep
Cool Records.
