Tom, as you know, I have the LDG AT1000PRO II automatic antenna tuner and
love it. It does not interface with my TS-590 using the 590's automatic
tuner button, but I programmed my PF-a button to the left of the power
on/off button to drop my power down to only 10 wats and allow me to simply
press the AT1000 tune button, and it works perfectly. For programming other
functions, I use the PF-b button and the two buttons on the top of my
Kenwood hand Mic, which I am still using.

That's what I thought, Ed.

The price is kind of steep for my budget right now.

I'd prefer an auto-tuner to a manual one for the reasons discussed earlier.

Will have to wait and see how this all works out.

Gm Tom, I use a Palstar but not the auto kind. Mine is the 2 K but I know
folks that use the auto and love them. I think there around 14 or 15
hundred now. Good luck on your choice Tom.

Ed:

I assume you currently have a Palstar?

If so, can you give me the model number, and an idea of the going price?

Subject: External Autotuners With TS590

Hi, all.

As I indicated yesterday, I am now seriously thinking of upgrading my
station here to include an external auto-tuner of some kind that might work
directly with the TS590 and a solid-state amplifier like the ALS600 or
ALS1300.

My current setup with my Tentech 238A manual tuner and AL811H amplifier
works great, but I would like a setup that would involve easier antenna
tuning and band changing, especially when contesting and using an amplifier.

Originally, I was looking at the LDG AT1000 external auto-tuner, but I was
disappointed to find out from LDG Tech Support that LDG does not make any
high-power auto-tuners that interface directly with the TS590. This is
disappointing to me, since I was hoping to avoid having to use up one of the
PF buttons on the TS590 for antenna tuning.

I am now seriously looking at the MFJ 998. I know that Steve (KW3A) has had
good luck with his, which is encouraging. Of course, when reading e-ham
reviews, there are always those who have had negative experiences, due to
MFJ quality-control issues, but I'm hoping those are in the minority. If
anyone else on the list has had experience with the MFJ 998, please let me
know what you found.

Of course, my first preference would be a Palstar external auto-tuner, but I
simply don't have the money for that right now.
