Tom, I think he was referring to what's typically called the speech
processor on a ham rig, which is just a compressor.

David, speech processing is the larger case which can include speech
compression. Speech compression is a very specific alteration of speech
involving a number of kinds of potential manipulations of speech to bring it
in
to a smaller envelope usually for transmitting either through a hearing aid
or a
radio system transmitter. Speech processing can include anything from
compression to removing background noise from speech and a host of other
alterations (usually modifications) to the speech.
